Promoter – António Durão

Action – Course Programming, Production and Design of Videogames

Description – This course is aimed at all those who enjoy video games and want to create their own games, or who want to enter the industry through an UpSkilling/ReSkilling process.

The course covers a variety of topics, including programming, design, production and three modules of creative techniques, which are unique in Portugal in this type of training offer. It was created to respond to a clearly defined problem: the lack of specialist skills in the growing video game industry. This shortage, which has been reported by several studies, is quantified in several sectoral reports, showing the urgent need for qualified training in this area.

It’s a very complete course, providing comprehensive training in all the fundamental areas of video game creation – from programming to design, project management and creativity. The scope of the intervention is thus precisely defined: increasing digital competence in the population through specific training in the videogame industry.

The objectives for this type of teaching are: to provide students with the practical and theoretical skills necessary to create their own projects, and thus succeed in having their place in the video game industry.

These results will be measured during the course through practical projects, active participation in all modules and the creation of a portfolio of projects/games. This course is extremely relevant to advances in the technology industry, particularly in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and virtualization.

These advances are opening new horizons for serious games (Serious Games), a subcategory of video games whose main objective is education or training, rather than mere entertainment. Within this industry, we are witnessing significant innovations that allow the integration of gaming in society through different platforms and with different objectives.

A particularly notable example resides in the medical and rehabilitation field, where serious games have come to play a crucial role. In Portugal, there are already several successful examples of this application of videogames. The use of video games in rehabilitation environments has shown promising results, contributing to a faster and more effective recovery of patients.

Furthermore, the implementation of AI in serious games has made it easier to customize the gaming experience, adapting it to each player’s individual needs and abilities. Thus, the objectives of our course are perfectly aligned with these current and future trends in the video game industry. By providing students with the theoretical and practical skills needed to create their own games and enter the industry.
